Formatting Your Site for Mobile and Desktop

Internet usage on mobile devices versus traditional desktops has shifted to 63% globally, and this statistic spotlights the importance of website owners to proof web content and design for both modalities before hitting that sacred “publish” button. Learn how to format your SquareSpace website for optimal mobile and desktop viewing by reading the step-by-step instructions below ir watch the video tutorial.

A recent client shared their frustration with investing hours of work into their initial DIY site design and publishing it, only to find the mobile view needed additional work.

Web design formatting for desktop and mobile.

“When I made updates to my website, then, reviewed it on my phone, I was surprised to see how off the formatting was compared to my desktop view - and I’d already published the content! That is a great topic which would be helpful to website owners.”

At Matilti Web Design, there is a responsibility to consider the customer experience after the website launch has been achieved and, months later, the customer needs to make an update. When an owner makes the update, it’s important to think about that experience for both modalities.

In SquareSpace, the ability to switch between both views is quick and intuitive. Let’s jump into it!

1.      Go to your SquareSpace dashboard and select the ellipses (3 dots) and choose Settings.

2.      Once the page loads, close it out and go to the page you’d like to format.

3.      Enter the edit mode for the page, then, toggle between the desktop and mobile modes.

4.      Adjust the page blocks and sections to your desired layout. For example:

  • To adjust the text block, remove line breaks, then decrease the block size.

  • To adjust the section size, hover over the Up/Down arrows icon, then, hold down the mouse to increase or decrease the size.

5.      Next, proof your design in the Desktop view and apply your edits.

6.      Finally, hit the Save button and check off “website update” from your to-do list.

Matilti wants to provide value to its clients after the launch and to eliminate the need to hire an expensive web designer for a simple update. The user experience matters beyond the publication day.
